Webinar: Trauma-Informed Practice & Mental Health in Career Development

As career practitioners, we have the privilege of working alongside people with diverse life experiences, worldviews, and goals.

Regardless of the context of your career practice, it’s likely that you’re working with people with experience of mental ill-health and/or trauma.

The most recent National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing found that 21.5% of people had experienced a mental disorder in the previous year, with that number rising to 38.8% for young people aged 16-24 years. The Productivity Commission estimated that 75% of Australian adults have experienced a traumatic event during their lifetime.

Understanding as much as we can about different life experiences and perspectives, and how these may affect a person’s career development, can make us more effective and inclusive practitioners.

This session will discuss the latest research and resources on:

  • How experiences of mental ill-health and trauma might impact career development
  • The potential for effective career development to positively impact wellbeing
  • An overview of trauma-informed practice and how it can be embedded into career development practice
  • How we can support people experiencing mental ill-health within the scope of our roles as career practitioners

Using an interactive format, attendees will have the opportunity to unpack these concepts, reflect on their own practice and collaboratively brainstorm practical approaches that they can apply straight away.
