The Defence Community Organisation (DCO) and Defence Families of Australia (DFA) discuss the career development needs of the civilian partners of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and how the Partner Employment Assistance Program (PEAP) funds eligible spouses to access professional career services.

According to the 2017 ADF Families Survey, 81% of ADF partners report they have made employment sacrifices because of their spouse’s ADF career.

“Compared to the rest of the Australian workforce, unemployment levels among ADF partners are high. For ADF partners who are employed, overall satisfaction with their work arrangements is not very high. These partners commonly experience underemployment, lack of employment security, and often need to make compromises in terms of the amount and nature of work they perform” (2017 ADF Families Survey)

National Convenor of DFA, Maree Sirois, shares data and anecdotal evidence of ADF partner career experiences, challenges and concerns. Defence recognises the challenges that may be presented when navigating military life, in particular the requirement for families to relocate due to posting and the unfortunate instances of ADF members transitioning on medical grounds. The Defence Partner Employment Assistance Program (PEAP) provides funding towards initiatives aimed to assist with the immediate employability of ADF partners in the circumstances of relocation due to posting or the medical transition of a member. Eligible partners of ADF members can apply for up to $1500 funding, in each posting location or when the member is medically transitioning, to access career support initiatives by professional career service providers.

DCO discusses the types of employment-related initiatives funded, the application process (which includes a quote from a professional service provider), and the payment system.
